The 2022 FOX Australian Supercross Championship is heading to Newcastle on the November 26, as Australia’s best supercross athletes compete in the Newcastle Triple Crown.
After two rounds of competition, SX1 rookie Aaron Tanti and veteran Justin Brayton are tied on points heading into Newcastle.
“Justin (Brayton) has been super consistent and rarely does he put a foot wrong. For me, I’m trying to do the same thing, but just trying to do it a little better,” said Tanti.
“It’ll be really cool for my career if I can be the one to knock him off his crown.”
For Brayton, both McDonald Jones Stadium and the Triple Crown format are of interest to the #1 Team Honda HRC pilot, as the 38-year-old North Carolinian sets his sights on championship number five.
“I’ve heard that McDonald Jones Stadium is great, so I’m just excited for that. The Triple Crown is set to be interesting – I love those – so yeah, excited to get there and have a good battle with the guys,” said Brayton.
SX2 has been dominated by Englishman Max Anstie, with the Team Honda HRC racer sweeping both Melbourne and Adelaide Main Events. Australian Nathan Crawford sits in second, while Canadian Cole Thompson sits in third.
A welcomed addition to the Newcastle Triple Crown will be the presence of two-time World Supercross Champion and Kurri Kurri born Chad Reed, who will be in attendance with his whole family for the event, and on hand to interact and sign autographs with his hometown fans.
Reed returned to his hometown primary school in the lead up to the event, inspiring the next generation of children coming through as he shared his story to supercross stardom.
Newcastle Councillor Peta Winney-Baartz said the Newcastle Triple Crown event provided a fantastic opportunity for Newcastle sports fans to experience the country’s best supercross riders competing in their own backyard.
“The Newcastle region is fortunate not only to be a breeding ground for some of the world’s best Supercross riders like Chad Reed, but to have top-class venues such as McDonald Jones Stadium that can host a spectacle such as the FOX Australian Supercross Championship, AUSX Triple Crown,” Cr Winney-Baarta said.
“Attracting a diverse range of events to McDonald Jones Stadium provides our city with the opportunity to showcase Newcastle’s broad range of tourism and hospitality offerings to visitors from intrastate and interstate.”
“City of Newcastle is thrilled to have worked with Venues NSW through our strategic partnership to bring this high-octane event to our city and we can’t wait to join the 16,000 fans at McDonald Jones Stadium to watch Australia’s best Supercross riders in action.”
The Newcastle Triple Crown is set to be the biggest Australian Supercross event of the year, with an expected 16,000 strong supercross fans in attendance and a multitude of initiatives on hand that the whole family can enjoy. From world class supercross action, to event activations and a fireworks show to cap it all off, the Newcastle Triple Crown will be an event to remember.
