Known to locals as Nuddas, Nunawading sounds like a name you would locate on a map somewhere in the Outback. Thankfully for Melbourne’s eastern suburbs dirtbike riders, Nunawading Motocross Club is an impressive club-run motocross track located just 18km east of Melbourne’s CBD. It’s that close to the Mexican city you can almost see it from the casino!
The Nunawading and District Motocross Club has a rich history which dates back more than 40 years, when motocross in Australia was still in its infancy. Originally called Happy Wheels, the club changed its name to Trail Wheels before settling on the Nunawading Motocross Club. These day’s almost everyone simply calls it Nuddas.
What the volunteer-run lacks in multiple track selections, it more than makes up for with its single 1200m motocross circuit which has been carefully designed to provide an enjoyable challenge for riders of all ages and skill levels.
The club has made the most of the flat terrain, building a circuit which is a combination of motocross and supercross. A collection of varying size table-top jumps allows novice and experienced riders to improve their jumping skills and a number of the doubles have been fine-tuned over the years – including the infamous Canyon. It’s a safe roll-through as two singles or a test of nerves as a double for the experienced rider.
Small changes, based on rider feedback, are made to the track on a regular basis, with major changes undertaken over the Christmas break to keep the track fresh.
The club has a full calendar of race meetings throughout the year, with three-to-four Club Championship rounds and their Annual Good Friday Charity Race every year. Club Champs are open to NDMX Members only but the Good Friday race is open to everyone.
The track is open for social riding every Saturday between 9.30am and 4.30. It’s open on Sundays from 12:30 to 4pm and Wednesdays between 4:30pm and 7.30pm during daylight savings. Riders are split into capacity groups for alternating 15-minute sessions.
Nuddas caters for all levels from beginner to pro-level, with bike sizes ranging from 50cc to 450cc, two and four-stroke. Sessions are run in bike sizes and rider ability (Beginner/Interm/Advanced). Small wheel bikes would not be out on the track with big wheel bikes. Sessions will be run depending on the number of riders on the day
