Yesterday, the World Supercross Championship (WSX) PR department sent out a media release, somewhat addressing the rumours going around at the moment. Here’s what they said:
“We’re aware of rumours circulating over the past 24 hours regarding the FIM World Supercross Championship and its 2023 rounds. While we can’t provide specific information today, we will be sharing significant news soon regarding the 2023 racing schedule, together with positive future developments that support the championship series.
“We have been in consistent communication with teams and owners, who have been highly supportive. We look forward to the 2023 Championship rounds finishing strongly, with hotly contested racing determining who will be crowned the 2023 FIM World Supercross Champions this November in Melbourne.”
Here’s what we know and what it could be about:
- You can’t buy tickets for the Canadian and German rounds while you can buy tickets for Singapore, Abu Dhabu and Australia.
- The French round was cancelled due to “unforeseen logistical issues and scheduling” but we heard it was because of unrest in the country and issues with low ticket sales.
- Rumours of some rounds being cancelled from a lack of funding from capital investment.
- Some teams have been told there might be cancellations. Probably Germany and Singapore and possibly Canada.
- Australia and Abu Dhabi to go ahead as they are financially safe.
- SuperMotocross numbers have done well so far and drawn some capital away from WSX.
- WSX may have lost access to some capital from their main investor Mubadala
- Teams were sent an email re capital funding and would know in the next week.
- If Mubadala have pulled out is there a future for the series?
This is all speculation and what we know from speaking with some teams. Keen to hear what WSX have to say.
