We’ve had this Torrot Motocross One long termer for over eight months now and while Jaxon and I have absolutely loved living with it, I felt there was something missing. I recall fond memories with my dad 30 years ago tinkering on bikes in the garage and learning all about how to maintain a combustion engine and how to pronounce profanities.

Sadly, with electric bikes there’s not much maintenance. The only thing we’ve done to the Torrot Motocross One Long Termer is lube the chain, steering head, swingarm bearings and shock linkage and that’s a simple, boring process. I simply lean the bike onto the sidestand and drown it in Motul’s E.Z Lube. I don’t even have to run the bike after a wash to clear the water out of the exhaust because there isn’t one!

There’s no engine oil or air filters to change. There’s no valve clearances and spark plugs to check or carburettors to clean. If I asked my son to pass me a 12mm T-bar, I’m not sure he would know what it is! Now that’s sad.

Or is it?

I am probably romanticising about how good working on dirtbikes as a kid was. I’m sure it wasn’t that nostalgic at the time and for my dad, it was probably a pain in the arse, as it was and is for so many other moto-dads out there. Not having to worry about any of the above after Jax rides the Torrot gives me more time to do what I want to do or more time for Jax to ride! The Torrot Motocross One has been almost completely maintenance-free and everything on it is still as good as new.

It’s incredible to think of the time I would’ve spent changing oils, plugs and filters already and while it means Jax may miss out on learning some of life’s essential lessons, I question in an age of electric everything, if they are still essential! I guess only time will tell.
