The WillowbankMX project has been in the works for over four years and is finally nearing completion for stage one with hopes the park will be open within the next two months.
The motocross park is built on a 35 hectare site about 45 minutes out of Brisbane in an area zoned industrial. Neighbours include a Bentonite mine, an operational coal mine and an explosives plant. Park planners and officials are confident these neighbours will have no issue with the minimal noise created by motocross bikes.
It is also in close proximity to Willowbank Raceway, which is about to embark on a $220 million upgrade.
It is a privately owned park, so riders will not have to have a Motorcycling Queensland licence to be able to ride there.
Development approval was granted by Ipswich City Council earlier this year, and construction is currently underway for stage one. This will include a main MX track, a senior stadium MX track and a separate junior MX track. The managers will be taking feedback from riders about what they want to see in future stages.
The tracks are being built by an expert with more than 20 years in track construction, both for private and commercial venues, and a number of pro riders have already been out testing; with fantastic feedback so far.
This is an exciting development for Queensland, with Urban sprawl threatening motorsports tracks around the world. There are many tracks that have closed in recent years, in particular in South East Queensland, and some of the existing ones are also under threat of closing.
